After <a href=\"https:\/\/omnivorescookbook.com\/top-10-sichuan-street-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">my gourmet trip to Chengdu, Sichuan<\/a>, I was hooked on this dish and determined to recreate it at home.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This recipe is different from many spicy wonton recipes out there. There are no shortcuts used. I always recommend the homemade one because it\u2019s the most fresh, and you can find <a href=\"https:\/\/omnivorescookbook.com\/how-to-make-chili-oil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">my recipe here<\/a>. It requires a mere 10 minutes to make and will last practically forever in your fridge. Once you make this ingredient, you can start to cook <a href=\"https:\/\/omnivorescookbook.com\/dan-dan-noodles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dan Dan Noodles<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/omnivorescookbook.com\/recipes\/bang-bang-chicken\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bang Bang Chicken<\/a> like a pro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you prefer to purchase your chili oil rather than make it, I highly recommend the <a href=\"https:\/\/themalamarket.com\/collections\/all\/products\/chengdu-crispy-chili-oil?aff=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Chili Crisp Oil<\/a> from The Mala Market. It tastes fresh, contains no additives or preservatives, has a good ratio of oil and chili crisp, and a balanced flavor without being too spicy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-seasoned-sweet-soy-sauce\">Seasoned sweet soy sauce<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Seasoned sweet soy sauce is another ingredient that makes the wonton in chili oil taste authentic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this recipe, I use my <a href=\"https:\/\/omnivorescookbook.com\/flavored-sweet-soy-sauce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">homemade soy sauce<\/a>. It is a thick, rich sauce reduced from soy sauce, sugar, aromatics, and tons of spices. It is much more fragrant than the type you purchase from a store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you prefer to use a bottled sauce, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/46oF6QE\">Lee Kum Kee Sweet Soy Sauce<\/a> is a good choice. It is not as aromatic as the homemade version but it\u2019s a good replacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another option is to use regular soy sauce plus sugar. But note, in this case, the sauce will come out thinner and have a slightly different flavor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NOTE: the Chinese style sweet soy sauce is different from Kecap Manis (the type of sweet soy sauce usually used in Southeast Asian cooking), which is much sweeter. Then add the wonton sauce to the wontons and mix them together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-store-and-reheat-nbsp\">How to store and reheat&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Uncooked wontons freeze well and you don\u2019t need to thaw them before boiling. This recipe makes quite a few servings. So I highly recommend freezing the portions that you won\u2019t consume immediately, so you can enjoy them later.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To cook frozen wontons, simply follow the same steps.
